The E-class 2-4-0 type locomotives were acquired to work passenger and goods train services on the South Australian Railways broad gauge system. Only one was purchased by the South Australian Railwaysdirect from the builder. Two came from the Melbourne & Essendon Railway in Victoria and three were purchased from the Canterbury Provincial Railway of New Zealand. The locomotives purchased from New Zealand were salvaged from the wreck of the ship "Hyderabad" which went ashore during a gale near Levin, New Zealand, on 24th June 1878. They eventually arrived at Port Adelaide in various other ships. No. 13 was converted to a tender engine to work with No. 56 originally built in this form to work mixed trains on the north line.
